Your Options - Self Help Tool

This tool will help you understand the options you have to deal with a Centrelink debt (or someone you’re supporting). We’ll ask you questions about your debt and your situation, and we’ll use this information to summarise the most relevant options to you.

You’ll be able to download an information package that explains these options, where to get help, and the questions you should ask when you get help.

Important information before you use this tool

This tool can:

  • Help you understand your options for responding to a Centrelink debt.
  • Help you ask the right questions when you speak to a lawyer (or someone else helping you with your debt).

This tool cannot:

  • Give you legal advice.
  • Guarantee a favourable outcome when seeking review of a debt.
  • Help you with debts that are not related to Centrelink payments.
  • Tell you whether Centrelink will investigate or prosecute you for fraud.

Before challenging a debt you should be aware there are risks:

  • The reviewer may find you owe more money than Centrelink originally thought.
  • The reviewer may decide your debt was incurred by fraud. This may lead to an investigation or prosecution.
